If you ask a marketer or business owner what they’d like most in the world, they’ll almost always tell you “more customers.”

 

What often comes after customers on a business’ wish list? More traffic to their site. There are many ways you can increase traffic to you your website. We’re going to look at 21 of them, including several ways to boost site traffic for FREE.

 

1. Advertise

This one is so obvious, we’re going to look at it first. Paid search, social media advertising and display advertising are all excellent ways of attracting visitors, building your brand and getting your site in front of people.

 

Adjust your paid strategies to suit your goals – do you just want more traffic, or are you looking to increase conversions, too? Each paid channel has its pros and cons, so think carefully about your objectives before you reach for your credit card.

 

If you’re hoping that more traffic to your site will also result in more sales, you’ll need to target high rating keywords as part of your paid search strategy. Yes, competition for these search terms can be fierce (and expensive), but the payoffs can be worth it.

 

2. Social Media

It’s not enough to produce great content and hope that people find it – you have to be proactive. One of the best ways to increase traffic to your website is to use social media channels to promote your content.

 

Twitter is ideal for short, snappy (and tempting) links, whereas Google promotion can help your site show up in personalised search results and seems especially effective in B2B niches. If you’re a B2C product company, you might find great traction with image-heavy social sites like Pinterest and Instagram. 

3. Mix It Up

There is no magic formula for content marketing success, despite what some would have you believe. For this reason, vary the length and format of your content to make it as appealing as possible to different kinds of readers.

 

Intersperse shorter, news-based blog posts with long form content as well as video, infographics and data-driven pieces to create maximum impact.

 

4. Craft Irresistible Headlines

Headlines are one of the most important parts of your content. Without a compelling headline, even the most comprehensive blog post will go unread. Master the art of headline writing.

 

For example, the writers at BuzzFeed and Upworthy often write upward of twenty different headlines before finally settling on the one that will drive the most traffic, so think carefully about your headline before you hit “publish.”

 

5. Pay Attention to On-Page SEO

Think SEO is dead? Think again. Optimising your content for search engines is still a valuable and worthwhile practice. Are you making the most of image alt text?

 

Are you creating internal links to new content? What about meta descriptions? Optimizing for on page SEO doesn’t have to take ages, and it could help boost your organic traffic.

 

 

6. Target Those Long-Tail Keywords

Got your high commercial intent keyword bases covered? Then it’s time to target long-tail keywords too. Long-tail keywords account for a majority of web searches, meaning that if you’re not targeting them as part of your paid search or SEO efforts, you’re missing out.

 

Before you say it – no, true guest blogging isn’t dead, despite what you may have heard. Securing a guest post on a reputable site can boost your website traffic and help build your brand at the same time.

 

Be warned, though – standards for guest blogging have changed radically during the past eighteen months, and spammy tactics could result in stiff penalties. Proceed with caution.

 

7. Invite Others to Guest Blog on Your Site

Guest blogging is definitely a two-way street. In addition to posting content to other people’s blogs, invite people in your niche to blog on your own site. They’re likely to share and link to their guest article, which could bring new readers to your site. Just be sure that you only post high-quality content without spammy links, because Google is really cracking way down on low-quality guest blogging.

Rather than trying to persuade other sites to link back to you (a tedious process), create clickable and shareable content that just begs to be linked to.

LinkedIn has become much more than a means of finding another job. The world’s largest professional social network is now a valuable publishing platform in its own right, which means you should be posting content to LinkedIn on a regular basis.

 

Doing so can boost traffic to your site, as well as increase your profile within your industry – especially if you have a moderate to large following.

10. Use Internal Linking

The strength of your link profile isn’t solely determined by how many sites link back to you – it can also be affected by your internal linking structure. When creating and publishing content, be sure to keep an eye out for opportunities for internal links.

 

This not only helps with SEO, but also results in a better, more useful experience for the user – the cornerstone of increasing traffic to your website.

11. Interview Those Industry Thought Leaders

You’d be amazed how many people will be willing to talk to you if you just ask them. Send out emails requesting an interview to thought leaders in your industry, and publish the interviews on your blog. Not only will the name recognition boost your credibility and increase traffic to your website, the interviewee will probably share the content too, further expanding its reach.

 

12. Use Email Marketing

So many businesses are focused on attracting new customers through content marketing that they forget about more traditional methods. Email marketing can be a powerful tool, and even a moderately successful email blast can result in a significant uptick in traffic. Just be careful not to bombard people with relentless emails about every single update in your business.

 

Also, don’t overlook the power of word of mouth marketing, especially from people who are already enjoying your products or services. A friendly email reminder about a new service or product can help you boost your traffic, too.

 

13. Make Sure Your Site is Responsive

Today, more people than ever before are using mobile devices to access the web, and if you force your visitors to pinch and scroll their way around your site, you’re basically telling them to go elsewhere. Always ensure that your website is accessible and comfortably viewable across a range of devices, including smaller smartphones.

 

14. Make Sure Your Site is Fast

Ever found yourself waiting thirty seconds for a webpage to load? Me neither. If your site takes forever to load, your bounce rate will be sky high. Make sure that your pages are as optimised as possible, including image file sizes, page structure and the functionality of third-party plugins. The faster your site loads, the better.

 

15.  Create a Sense of Community

People want to speak their minds and weigh in on subjects they feel passionately about, so building a community into your site is a great way to start a conversation and increase traffic to your website. Implement a robust commenting system through third-party solutions such as Facebook comments or Disqus, or create a dedicated forum where visitors can ask questions.

 

16. Make Yourself Heard in The Comment Sections

You probably visit at least a few sites that are relevant to your business on a regular basis, so why not join the conversation?

 

Commenting doesn’t necessarily provide an immediate boost to referral traffic right away, but making a name for yourself by providing insightful, thought-provoking comments on industry blogs and sites is a great way to get your name out there – which can subsequently result in driving more traffic to your own site.

 

Just remember that, as with guest posting, quality and relevance are key – you should be engaging with other people in your niche, not dropping spam links on unrelated websites.

17. Look At Your Analytics Data

Google Analytics is an invaluable source of data on just about every conceivable aspect of your site, from your most popular pages to visitor demographics. Keep a close eye on your Analytics data, and use this information to inform your promotional and content strategies. Pay attention to what posts and pages are proving the most popular. Inspect visitor data to see how, where and when your site traffic is coming from.

 

18. Get Active on Social Media

It’s not enough to just share content through social channels – you need to actively participate in the community, too. Got a Twitter account? Then join in group discussions with relevant hashtags. Answer questions and engage with your readers. Nothing turns people off quicker than using social media as a broadcast channel – use social media as it was intended and actually interact with your fans.

19. Post Your Content to Sites Like Quora and Reddit

Firstly, don’t spam Quora, Reddit and other similar sites hoping to “hit the jackpot” of referral traffic, because it’s not going to happen. Members of communities like Quora and Reddit are extraordinarily savvy to spam disguised as legitimate links, but every now and again, it doesn’t hurt to submit links that these audiences will find genuinely useful. Choose a relevant subreddit, submit your content, then watch the traffic pour in.

20. Use Video into Your Content Strategy

 

Text-based content is all well and good, but video can be a valuable asset in both attracting new visitors and making your site more engaging. Data shows that information retention is significantly higher for visual material than it is for text, meaning that video marketing is an excellent way to grab – and hold – your audience’s attention, and boost traffic to your website at the same time.

 

21. Research Your Competition

If you haven’t used software like BuzzSumo to check out what your competitors are up to, you’re at a huge disadvantage. These services aggregate the social performance of specific sites and content to provide you with an at-a-glance view of what topics are resonating with readers and, most importantly, making the rounds on social media. Find out what people are reading (and talking about), and emulate that kind of content to bring traffic to your website.

15 Powerful Free Hacks To Promote Your Blog And Boost Traffic

How To Promote Your Blog

Many people, start blogs with lofty dreams — to build an audience, leave their day job, land a book deal, or simply to share their genius with the rest of the world.

 

Getting started is relatively easy, since all it takes to maintain a blog is a little time and some good old-fashioned inspiration. So why do blogs have a higher failure rate than even restaurants?

 

According to a recent survey, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs had been updated in the past 120 days.

 

 

The Harsh Truth About Blogging

 

That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left alone on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.

 

Judging from conversations with retired bloggers, many people who assumed that once they started blogging, the world would swiftly beat a path to their digital door. For large numbers though, this has clearly not been the case.

 

I’ve personally tried literally, every method on the Internet.

 

Now my blog posts do very well…

 

However, I want to let you know, that it didn’t happen overnight and it took much testing, failing and beginning all over again.

 

So here we go: These tips, if followed, are really going to assist you in getting far more eyes on your content and building your online presence. Let’s get started!

 

1: Publish More Articles

 

One of the most effective, but often ignored, ways to get traffic to a blog is by publishing more articles; research from Hubspot has shown that businesses that publish 16+ blog posts monthly get 3.5 times more traffic and 4.5 times more leads than businesses that publish between 0 – 5 blog posts monthly.

 

Seven-figure blogger Neil Patel also revealed that his monthly traffic went from 46,134 visitors to 59,787 visitors because he increased content frequency from one article to two articles weekly.

 

No matter your niche, research has shown that publishing more content will always lead to an increase in traffic for you; increase your content frequency to two or more articles a week, and you’ll notice a significant increase in traffic to your blog.

 

2: Publish Longer Content

Research has shown that Google and other search engines give preference to longer, comprehensive articles; research by serpIQ that analyzed top 10 results for over 20,000 keywords found that Google ranks content that have more than 2,000 words better than content with fewer words.

 

Research by Buzzsumo, in a partnership with Moz, which analyzed over 1 million articles, found that articles that are 3,000 – 10,000 words get twice as many shares and three times the links content that have fewer than 1,000 words get.

 

3: Ask Podcast shows to interview you

Similar to being interviewed on sites, you can ask podcast shows to interview you; many podcasters, myself included, will happily oblige if they find that you have an exciting story.

 

 

4: Promote Your Blog on Pinterest

Pinterest can be a great source of traffic to your blog and many bloggers have leveraged it to massively boost their blog traffic. 

 

 

Use Canva.com (There is a specific Pinterest template over at Canva you can use for this!)

 

Look for quality interesting images, and focus on using irresistible headlines and you’ll be getting quality Pinterest traffic in no time.

 

5: Effectively Leverage Email Signatures

 

Many of us interact with hundreds or even thousands of emails every month; these are some nice eyeballs for your blog, and you can convert them to readers by including a link to your blog in your email signature.

 

6: Focus on the Mobile Experience

Research shows that the number of mobile Internet users has now exceeded the number of desktop internet users.

 

Google also recently made an upgrade to their algorithm that favoured sites that were optimised for mobile users and that penalized sites that were not optimised for mobile users. Some sites lost as much as 46.6% of their search traffic due to not having a mobile-optimised site while some gained as much as 30.1% traffic by having a mobile-friendly website.

 

7: Constantly Refresh Old Posts

One of Google’s ranking factors is content freshness, and this reportedly affects as much as 35% of Google searches; this supports research from Hubspot that shows that blogs that publish 16+ articles monthly get 3.5X more traffic than blogs that publish less than 4 articles monthly.

 

One way to benefit from Google’s freshness algorithm is by publishing more articles on your blog, while another way is by updating old articles; review articles you published months and years ago, eliminate outdated information and bring them forward. This will impact your blog’s search rankings and lead to more traffic.

 

8: Improve Your Headlines

Do you know that a simple headline change can result in a massive boost in traffic to your blog?

 

 According to Copyblogger, on average, 8 out of 10 people will read your headline but only 2 out of 10 will read your content.

 

This is why it is very important to learn how to write better headlines and put serious effort into your headlines. Check out my podcast episode #23

 

9: Link to A Lot of Authoritative Sources

Google uses a lot of factors to rank websites, including how many links points to a website, but very few people know that Google also ranks you based on how many people you link to.

 

If your website constantly links to authoritative websites and resources that are relevant to your niche, Google will assume that you’re a good and authoritative resource in your niche, and they’ll rank you better as a result; this, in turn, will lead to more traffic for you.

 

10.Don’t Ignore Basic SEO

Many bloggers ignore basic SEO, and they eventually suffer from it. Most successful bloggers get as much as 50% or more of their traffic from search engines; taking the right measures when it comes to SEO can double your blog traffic within a short period of time.

 

Things like using the right title tags, having a catchy description, ensuring that your site is easy to navigate, etc, can lead to a significant increase in traffic to your blog.

 

11: Use the Yoast.com  Wordpress plug in (This is a must for your website, and yes, it’s free!)

12: Write for the Scanner

Research shows that on average, most web users won’t read more than 28% of words on a website; in other words, while having longer, comprehensive articles will help your search engine rankings it won’t increase the chances of your content being read; the more people read your content, the more people will share it and the more traffic you will get.

 

The solution to this problem is to write your content for scanners.

 

Using headings and sub headings, bold, italics, numberings and bullets, you can make your blog content more presentable and scannable, and as a result boost traffic to your blog. Look at apple.com for inspiration when it comes to the perfect use of white space.

 

Edit ruthlessly

13: Use Images in ALL Your Blog Posts

Research shows that articles with images get 94% more views compared to articles without images. Make sure every article on your blog include one or relevant and appealing image, and this will significantly boost traffic to your blog.

 

Finding an online library stocked with pictures that are of high quality and available to use for free can be a daunting task.

 

A free image directory allows you to easily and quickly access pictures that are not just relevant and top quality but add more meaning, taste, and eloquence to your message.

 

 

In our visual world, having striking images and photos are vital in engaging your audience. Here are the 7 sites that I use for finding those free images that create a great visual impression.

First, there are no restrictions – you do not need to credit the author when using images from this website.

 

New photos are uploaded every day and organised accordingly. They have amazing pictures with a wide range e.g. roads, food, fashion, wedding, technology, business etc.

This is one of the largest free image directories. It has collated photos from many other free image sites and put them under one roof. So if you are in a rush, then this will work very well with you.

 

 

FREEMEDIAGOO.COM

 

They upload high quality illustrations of backgrounds and manyother photos. They have plenty of visual mediums you can choose from. Images have no restrictions.

 

 

PIXABAY.COM

 

Easy to download photos. They focus more on abstract shots, architecture, landscape, nature, backgrounds and patterns etc. You do not any to create an account.

 

FREEPHOTOSBANK.COM

 

Easy to download photos. They focus more on abstract shots, architecture, landscape, nature, backgrounds and patterns etc. You do not any to create an account.

 

 

STOCKSNAP.IO

 

StockSnap.io has a large selection of beautiful free stock photos and high resolution images.

 

The site also has a very handy search feature making it easy to browse through the thousands of images available. In addition, the site tracks views and downloads so you can find the most popular photos available.

 

StockSnap adds hundreds of images on a daily basis and all photos are released under creative commons public domain – no attribution required.

However, the license may vary. Many are “Creative Commons Zero,” which means they are free to use for any purpose, including commercial, with no attribution required.

 

 

14: Make your website faster

A one second delay in website loading time will result in a 7 percent loss in conversion, and that slow websites cost the U.S. e-commerce market $500 billion annually.

 

Not just this, but you’ll also lose 40 percent of visitors to your website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load. If your website is slow, then you’re already losing half your visitors.

 

Make your website faster and watch your traffic increase significantly.

 

15: Create a weekly schedule
