If you still think Facebook and Twitter are the be-all and end-all of social media marketing tools, then think again.

Pinterest pins are 100 times more spreadable than a tweet, with the retweet average hitting only 1.4%. And, as for Facebook, the half-life of a pin is 1,600 x longer than a Facebook post 

 

Since the recent Instagram purchase by Facebook, Pinterest has become the hot ticket item for business marketing.

 

And that’s for good reason. If an increase of 27% in Pinterest accounts of Fortune 500 companies over the last year (including Exxon Mobile, Wal-Mart, and Apple) isn’t an indication that your business should be joining the 70 million total users, I don’t know what would be.

 

Aside from feeding obsessions with exotic destiny vacations and gourmet food, the real strength of Pinterest is the integrated features of their business accounts.

Add a hovering Pin It button to any image on any of your sites or your phone app through Pinterest directly. Or, if you use WordPress, there’s a Pinterest Pin It Hover button plugin.

You have to use some SEO strategy to get your pins discovered by the eyes of your target audience. But, don’t worry, it doesn’t take much to optimize your pins in regard to Pinterest searches. Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Research keywords. Try a tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner to find popular keywords related to your business and your pins.

Step 2: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin titles.

Step 3: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin descriptions.

Step 4: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin image file names.

As with any SEO you use, make sure not to sound too “keywordy.” Don’t go too crazy and add three keywords to your title and descriptions like a robot would. Optimise and still sound human by simply adding a strong keyword within the right context.

 

14. Use a “Call-to-Action” in your Pin

In the same way you use a call-to-action in your ad copy, a call-to-pin will significantly increase the engagement of your pins. In fact, you’ll get 80% more engagement with a CTP. In your pin’s description, add a little something like:

Now that you know what kinds of pins are popular and how to get your pins seen, the next step in Pinterest marketing is to use your pins to build relationships with followers and influencers that will grow your reach.

 

As we all know, more reach = more success.

 

Knowing what users look for when following other accounts will allow you to give them what they want and, in turn, grow your following. A little mind-reading never hurt anyone.

 

A recent study found that the three main factors that Pinterest users take into consideration in the should-I-follow-or-not decision-making process are:

 

  • how many accounts you are following / are following you
  • how many pins you have
  • how many boards you have

To be on top of those factors and build relationships to grow your reach, you need to:

 

16. Post Frequently

To get more Pinterest followers, you should post between 5-30 new pins every day. Make sure you are not just repinning the content of others, but also pinning your own unique pins with your own content.

 

Warning! Avoid a major Pinterest faux pas: don’t pin all 30 new pins within a 5-minute span. Spread your pinning throughout the day.

 

Tip! You can create a Secret Board and collect pins to save time. Load up your 20 or so pins in the morning, and keep them on your secret board. Throughout the day, return to the board and grab the pins you want to pin on other “live boards.”

 

17.  Engage with Followers, Reply to Comments

Just like you respond to tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram comments, engage with your followers directly by answering their questions and responding to their comments. Go the extra distance and address them directly, using their names to really take your customer service to the next level.

If you are commenting on these popular pins, your brand name will be seen by the huge number of people who follow those boards.

 

Tip! It’s a good idea to follow popular boards because they are relevant to your industry and business as opposed to “just because” they are the most popular. If your business has literally nothing to do with wedding fashion, you can do yourself a favor and follow the boards that have a following closer to yours. Those are the people you want to connect with anyway.

Ask if they will post on a board of yours, or offer to contribute to one of their boards. Offer ideas for their boards and show that you are familiar with their content when initiating collaboration, and you’ll be closer to that “yes” you’re looking for.

The rule for all social media is to mix up your content. You will lose the interest of your followers and lose your chances of gaining any new ones if your content is static and not diverse enough.

 

So, please whatever you do, don’t just post product photos.

 

Diversity of your pins is a hugely important factor when users were deciding whether to follow an account. So, throw in some other boards that give your followers added value in order to avoid coming off as overly salesy.

 

24. Include a Direct Link to Your Site

Not all of your pins are going to make sense as Rich Pins. (Product photos, events, and articles benefit from the added information provided with Rich Pins, but not all of your content will.)

It’s all about context.

 

25. Put Your Most Popular Boards on Top

Over time, you’ll be able to see which boards are more popular and get more engagement. Put your best foot forward and move these boards to the top of your page so when users come to your page, they will see your best material.

 

26. Create a Board Just for Blog Posts

Grab all those article Rich Pins you have, and organise them into their very own board! You’ll want to put this board at the top of your page so your followers will see it first thing. This will help draw traffic to your site and make it easier for users to find your content since it’s all in one easy-to-find-board. They will thank you.

 

27. Use Rich Pins! Huh? What are Rich Pins?

Rich Pins provide more context about an idea because they show extra information directly on a Pin.

There are four types of Rich Pins: app, product, recipe and article.

Add Rich Pins to your account.

Rich pins refer to Pinterest pins that have your website name and icon displayed underneath the pin image, easily directing users to the pin’s source.

STEP ONE: INSTALL THE “YOAST” SEO PLUGIN 

In order to set up rich pins, Pinterest requires you to add certain meta tags to your site. The Yoast plugin adds these for you.

 

After Yoast is activated, go to the Yoast’s “Features” tab. Make sure the “Advanced settings pages” is “Enabled” and that will enable the metadata.

 

STEP TWO: VISIT THE “RICH PIN VALIDATOR”

Go to Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator, and plug in a link to any blog post on your site (it CANNOT be the link to your homepage).

 It doesn’t matter which blog post and you only need to do one. Click “validate.”

 

APPLY

After validating, you should see a message that says “your pin’s been validated!” Then, click “apply now.” A pop up will come up with your website’s domain and “HTML tags” selected. Click “apply now” once again.

 

Now, you’ll just need to wait for a few days while Pinterest approves your application. Once it’s approved, your pins will all display your website name and icon.

 

Setting up Rich Pins is a two-step process.

 

First, you’ll need to add metadata to the content on your site.


To see what kind of metadata is available for each type of Rich Pin, check out our topics 
on article, product and recipe Pins. Generally, the most common formats are Open Graph and Schema.org. 

 

If you add metadata for multiple types of Rich Pins to your page, the type of Pin that appears will be based on priority. The priority of Rich Pin data is 1. App Pins, 2. Product Pins, 3. Recipe Pins and 4. Article Pins.

 

Second, apply for Rich Pins


You need to verify your Rich Pins before they appear on Pinterest. Choose any page on your site that you’ve added metadata to. Enter your chosen URL in our validator and click Validate.

 

Correct any problems you see with your metadata. Once everything is correct, select one of three options to indicate how you’ve marked up your pages: HTML Tags (if you are using Open Graph or Schema.org metadata), oEmbed (if you used the oEmbed format) 

 

Click Apply now.

 

Note: You only need to validate 1 URL to apply for Rich Pins on your entire domain. No need to submit all of your URLs

 

28. How to Start Using Pinterest for Business to Improve Your Visibility and Promote Your Brand Right Now:

 

Your Pinterest for Business account comes with a ton of marketing power that’s completely different from a personal account. To tap into that power, you need to:

 

1. Create popular images that are:

  • bright
  • crisp
  • high quality
  • 736×1102 pixels
  • infographics
  • in popular categories

 

2. Get your pins seen by:

  • using keywords in pin titles, descriptions, and image file names
  • linking to your other social media platforms
  • adding the Pin It Hover button and Pinterest widget to your sites
  • sending your pins in newsletters
  • adding a call-to-pin in your pin descriptions

 

3. Engage with followers and influencers to grow your reach by:

  • pinning up to 30 times per day
  • responding to follower comments
  • commenting on follower pins
  • following popular boards and commenting
  • inviting followers and influencers to pin on your boards
  • building influencer relationships
  • using “find friends” from Twitter and Facebook

 

4. Promote your brand successfully with:

  • direct site links in descriptions
  • a variety of content – seasonal and relevant

10 Reasons Your Website Copy Might Need Some Love

Made any improvements lately? – your headlines and call-to-actions in particular?

 Making your text much more engaging and captivating is actually one of the quickest and highest-impact ways to improve your website conversions and sales.

 

It doesn’t matter how good your website looks if your text doesn’t sizzle and captivate – your visitors won’t be excited to learn more and will bounce often – meaning many lost sales for you!

 

You don’t have to have a degree in marketing to write more captivating text either – Here are some expert tips to help you quickly become a copywriting pro, and convert many more of your visitors into sales.

 

1: Captivate visitors by mentioning their needs and pain points

 

Often the best way to improve the effectiveness of your text is to think in your visitor’s shoes and prominently mention words on key entry pages that relate to (and solves) their main needs, problems or frustrations.

 

Try asking intriguing questions in your text that your visitors can relate to (particularly in your headlines) and then mention why your offering is the best solution for them. Researching more about your main types of visitors and getting feedback from them is essential to do this.

2: Focus on benefits and results of your product/service – not just features

 

Your visitors of course need to know your product/service features, but many websites forgot to also translate them into benefits and potential results – which is what your visitors really ultimately care about.

 

Therefore its essential you prominently mention these on your product/services pages – for example, if you are selling services, you should mention the benefits (saving time, effort etc) and impact on revenue for your clients – not just the service features.

3: Use proven highly-engaging powerful words far more often

 

Give your website text a makeover by using time-tested marketing power words. How many of these great examples below are you using on your website? Go ahead and check right now, particularly for your key entry pages, and start introducing more:

 

Discover, Secret, Results, Imagine, Guaranteed, Instantly, Powerful, Easy, Simple, Exclusive…

 4: Do the ‘we we’ test to make your text more visitor-focused

 

To engage many more visitors, focus your words on their viewpoint, not on you or your business – so avoid using ‘we, I or us’ and your company name too often. Instead, use much more visitor-orientated and friendly words like ‘you’ and ‘yours’.

 

To help improve this, you should to the ‘we we’ test to check how many times you use each type of business or visitor word on your key pages. Make sure you use higher amounts of visitor-focused words – doing that will instantly upgrade the engagement of your text!

5: Write magnetic headlines to hook your visitors

 

Your headlines can make or break whether your visitors stay on your website or bounces prematurely.

 

Try using several styles to see which converts best, including benefit driven ones, social proof or testimonial focused ones, or pain point related questions. This tool helps you analyze how good your headlines are.

 

“On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar” David Ogilvy

 

Don’t forget to also test your headline size to make it stand out more, and the number of words used (short and sweet is better – ideally under 10 words). Here’s a great headline combining many best practices:

6: Know which boring and dull words to avoid like the plague

Some words are just a waste of space and opportunity on your web pages, and should be replaced with much better, more engaging words.

 

Here are some of the most conversion-killing words I still see way too often that you should avoid:

  • Submit (use a much more engaging word that implies the benefit of clicking)
  • Click here (pointless self-referential words – wasted opportunity to write a better call-to-action)
  • Cheap (makes your service/offering sound low quality – use ‘low cost’ or ‘affordable’ instead) 
  • Utilise, leverage, mission statement and other corporate words (too dull)

 

Edit ruthlessly

7: Ruthlessly cut your text and make it concise

To increase the chances of visitors reading your text and seeing your key points, you need to start really cutting down the amount of words you use.

Shorten your paragraphs and sentences, cut out fluff words, unnecessary extra detail words, and don’t ramble – be direct. If the words don’t help explain anything, or don’t add any real value to the sentence, then get rid of them.

8: Focus on improving your call-to-action button wording

The wording of your call-to-actions are critical – it’s essential you persuade more visitors to click on your buttons and key links. Always avoid using generic words like ‘learn more’, ‘submit’ or ‘subscribe’ – use much more compelling text instead.

Benefit and power related words will work well, as will using action-driven words, which leads us nicely into the next tip.

9: Inspire action – use words to get your visitors to act quickly

 

Realise that your visitors are often in a rush and don’t have much time, so get them to act quickly on your website offerings.

 

Action words are particularly important for using on your call-to-action buttons and links. Here are some good examples of action words to help you come up with ideas to test:

 

Now, Today, Get started, Fast, Quickly, Discover, Create, Instantly, Try, Learn, In Seconds.

10: Use sub-headers to make your text much easier to scan

Remember that visitors don’t read online the same way they do books or magazines – instead they scan text and will only read more if something catches their eye. Making use of many descriptive sub headers will make your text much easier to scan – they also help to break to categorise and break up long blocks of text.
